Common Problems and Solutions with Cold Laminating Film

Common Issues with Cold Lamination FilmsWrinkling, Fogging, and Bubbling

Causes of fogging and solutions:

  • Fogging is often used to describe the appearance of many hazy white spots after a cold mounting, especially in winter. The main reason for the fog spot is that the release liner coating is relatively thin and uneven, and the texture of the liner paper leads to the uneven glue surface of the laminating film. Choosing a release liner with a higher coating thickness and a flat surface can reduce this problem.
  • Cold laminating film glue is unevenly and thinly coated, and poor adhesion can also cause fogging spots. Increasing the amount and uniformity of glue application can alleviate this problem.
  • Temperature also has a certain impact on the fogging of the cold laminating film, and the glue coating standard should be adjusted according to the seasonal temperature, and the glue coating weight in winter is generally slightly higher than that in summer.

Wrinkling causes and solutions:

  • The tightness of one side of the cold laminating film is large, or the two sides are loose and the middle is tight, resulting in uneven picture and wrinkled lamination. In order to avoid this problem, the type of glue that matches the ambient temperature should be selected, especially in the northern winter, where the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor is large.
  • The tightness of one side of the raw material or the tightness of both sides and the middle of the material will also lead to uneven paper surface and wrinkle of the lamination. During the production process, the inspection of raw materials, semi-finished products and finished products should be strictly carried out to ensure that the laminating machine is free of wrinkles when idling for more than 5 meters before production and warehousing are allowed.
  • Laminating wrinkles can be caused by uneven laminating speeds, excessive tension or stretching of the film. Correct operation of the laminator, if possible, use a low-heating cold laminator and laminate at a low temperature of 40°C to avoid wrinkling, blistering and fogging.
  • Inconsistent or faulty laminator quality can also cause wrinkling of the laminator. Inspect the machine regularly to ensure trouble-free operation.

BUBBLING of blistering and solutions:

  • The inkjet layer does not dry thoroughly, and the solvent does not fully volatilize is one of the common causes of bubbling. Postponing lamination or assisting in drying can solve this problem and ensure that the picture dries thoroughly.
  • The inkjet layer is too thick, and the solvent residue cannot volatilize after the surface is dry, and the solvent volatilizes after overlay, causing bubbling. The inkjet thickness should be reduced.
  • There are dust or impurities on the surface during the lamination process, and the impurities are not compacted, resulting in air residue and bubbling. The operating environment should be kept clean and dust should be avoided as much as possible.
